At Save the Rain, we often say that the pyramid of human needs is built on a foundation of water. Because water is so fundamental to human life, it also underpins every other human need—especially good health.
In Northern Tanzania, access to clean drinking water is far from guaranteed. Most available groundwater contains dangerously high levels of naturally occurring fluoride. Prolonged exposure leads to skeletal fluorosis, a painful, debilitating condition that weakens bones, deforms limbs, and stains teeth a telltale brown. It affects millions of people worldwide, but disproportionately impacts children in rural, underserved areas.
Other common sources—rivers, open wells, and seasonal streams—are often contaminated with fecal bacteria, parasites, and industrial waste. The consequences are deadly. Globally, 1 in every 4 people—over 2 billion—lack access to safely managed drinking water.
Even when illness doesn’t kill, it robs children of days of school and drains family resources on hospital visits and medication. A weakened immune system creates a vicious cycle of sickness and vulnerability. Women walk miles and hours for water that may harm their families, but with no alternative, they are forced to risk it – or go without.
But there is a solution. And it’s both simple and sustainable.
By building domestic rainwater harvesting systems, Save the Rain provides families with direct access to safe, clean water at home. We look up instead of drilling down, harvesting pure, fluoride-free, abundant rain for water-starved communities.
Our model replaces danger with dignity, and illness with opportunity.
