What is the Global Water Crisis? The Global Water Crisis refers to the growing scarcity of clean, safe, and accessible water worldwide.
Why is the Global Water Crisis happening? Various factors conspire to compound the problem. Population growth puts mounting pressure on existing resources, while climate change subverts rainfall patterns and brings about more frequent droughts. Industrial and agricultural pollution contaminate precious water sources, while over-extraction depletes groundwater and surface water through excessive use.
What is the impact of the Global Water Crisis? Communities feel the impact in many ways: rising water costs, restricted access during droughts, and health issues linked to unsafe water sources. This crisis is even more dire for vulnerable communities, as daily life revolves around the search for water.
2.2 billion people worldwide currently lack access to safe drinking water, and 1 in 3 children lives in water scarcity.
Where does it affect people? Though the crisis is global, it is not evenly distributed. It typically affects poverty-stricken and underserved communities, and Sub-Saharan Africa is at the top of the list of the most vulnerable. Where we work in Northern Tanzania, the tectonic activity associated with the Great Rift has resulted in devastatingly high levels of naturally occurring fluoride in the groundwater. The impacts on human health are evident in the communities we work among. Skeletal fluorosis leaches calcium from bones, bowing limbs and causing crippling pain.
What is Save the Rain doing about it? We bring clean water home by building rainwater catchment and storage systems on people’s homes. Rainwater harvesting can work wherever rain falls. It’s why we look up instead of drilling down: our solution falls freely from the sky, and all we need to do is catch it.
How can you get involved? Every dollar you donate directly supports our life-saving work. Shop in our Store –100% of proceeds support our clean water projects. Spread the word and share our mission– every post, share, or conversation helps raise awareness and brings more attention to the cause. Host a Fundraiser — organize a local event, such as a walk or bake sale to raise awareness about the global water crisis and support our work.
Together, we can turn the tide of the global water crisis and make clean water a reality for those in need. Every tank built, every system improved, and every life changed is a testament to what we can achieve together.
